Love 'em or hate 'em, The Engineer is a granddaddy of the gastropub scene and was a long time regular feature in newspaper supplements. However, times have changed since the 90s and similar pubs can be found almost anywhere vaguely hip now. Inside, the Engineer actually looks like a local pub, but it takes itself far too seriously, veering too close 'restaurant' status for our liking. The food might be excellent, but the accompanying price tag is less appealing and coming here for a simple drink can occasionally be an uncomfortable experience. The front bar is fine, but it lacks sufficient seating, considering well over half the pub's space is devoted exclusively to eating. Unwelcome signs in the pretty garden instructing you which areas are reserved for eating also add to the general unease. Pubs, gastro or otherwise, should make you feel relaxed and comfortable, whereas this one can occasionally give the impression you should feel grateful they allowed you in.
