how to find it:
From Belsize Park tube, turn left onto the main road and left again onto Downsize Crescent. Then turn left at the end onto Lawn Road. It's at the end. Hampstead Heath train station: turn left out of the station and keep going straight. The pub is on the right, two minutes after the cross-junction.

The Stag is a former rough Irish local sat just south of the Royal Free Hospital, consequently meaning it's in the wrong place to attract Hampstead Heath's weekend tourists. With the off-putting frosted glass removed and the benefit of a refurbishment (in the usual bare floorboards and pine table mould) this is a solid local's pub; flat sharers, couples and older folk seem to mix perfectly comfortably. The couches at the front make it look and feel pretty comfortable - especially when either or both of the old pub dogs join you - and the relaxed atmosphere is helped by the good choice of music and friendly service. Add to this a mean pint of Guinness, plus good pub grub and you have the recipe for success. Arguably the best back garden in Hampstead tops off a pub which is certainly one of the less pretentious and lesser-known pubs in the area.
