how to find it:

Rather sneakily, Highgate tube is a fair walk from Highgate Village, with a 15 minute walk in-between. Leave Highgate tube by the pedestrian exit, take a left and cross straight over the large junction onto Southwood Lane Take the second right onto Castle Yard which leads to North Road. Turn right and its on the right. Alternatively walk (or catch the bus) up Highgate Hill from Archway. At the top of the hill in the heart of the village, the pub is over the other side of the mini-roundabout a few minutes walk down North Road on the right.

picture of The WrestlersThe sort of pub that always seems dark, even on the sunniest days, the Wrestlers is a bit of a find in Highgate. Decked out in dark wood, with minimal modern lighting on the walls and a stunning Inglenook fireplace, the Wrestlers offers punters the opportunity to step up to a set of mounted antlers and participate in its biannual Swearing on the Horns, dating back to 1635 (the pub itself started life in 1547). Don't worry if you're not too sure of what's expected of you: there are full details displayed beside the horns. Ceremonials aside, this remains a fine boozer, with plenty to tempt the palate on the drinks front, food on weekends, and Wotsits for the snack fan. There's plenty of space available, with some comfy sofas to the front, and proper pub furniture in the back: comfy chairs and huge tables with plenty of space to spread your newspaper on the table. There's also ample outdoor seating which seemed to be metamorphosing into a conservatory on our visit. The sort of place which offers an excellent selection of big food on big plates (a nice change) and has the racing, not the footy, on of a Saturday afternoon, The Wrestlers is a fine place to enjoy a pint in. It does close on weekday afternoons, as it's a bit too quiet to keep it open.
