Enfield can be a very mixed bag. Thankfully, for this pub we go to one of the oldest and nicest parts of Enfield. Set in a preservation area, it sits next to a small 17th century canal, complete with ducks and swans. It boasts as large a pub garden as you'll find anywhere, with plenty of seating, plus a conservatory. The building itself dates back to the 18th century, although sadly it appears nothing older than about 1998 remains of the interior. A recent sprucing up brightened things a little while also replacing the two pool tables with couches. We can only imagine this was done to improve the pub's clientele, who on past visits has frequently consisted of those stereotyped Essex boys and girls that haunt Enfield. Indeed, although our Sunday afternoon visit lacked the aforementioned punters, it was instead almost too quiet, with only half a dozen people in the whole place. With a couple of ales on and reasonable pub grub, this is a good place to visit any time of year, but it really comes into its own for those lazy summer afternoon pints in the garden.
