Given the changes to the area, the chances were high that this one would get bought out and relaunched - and so it has. We'd also have put a couple of quid on this one following in the neat footsteps of the nearby Alma and becoming a mature gastropub. Not so: changed it may be, but the butcher's block tables have yet to be moved in. In fact, not too much of the old furnishings have been consigned to the skip - the carpet still remains in place, for instance - though a shiny new DJ booth fills up one corner of the pub. The skylit back room still houses two pool tables, but the surrounding mural hints at the musical direction this one as taken: along with DJs dominating proceedings at the weekend; live music (of an acoustic bent) takes centre stage during the week. The welcome we received here was warm and informal, and whilst we feel certain parts of the new-look Edinburgh Cellars still retain the air of a work-in-progress (the skylight could do with a bit of tlc) there's a pleasant and welcoming pub at work here.
