Somehow, thankfully, the Princess of Wales was missed in the trendification of Primrose Hill and is definitely the better for it. This pub has it all: large windows at the front (which fold back for summer) and cosy nooks and crannies towards the back and in the basement. There is even a (sadly, under-utilised) garden. The central bar creates a good focal point and the numerous pot plants are a nice touch. A fair selection of real ales can be found and the food is both the cheapest in the area as well as superb. It can attract the older locals, witnessed by the popularity of the Sunday afternoon live jazz sessions (2 'till 4), but also a younger crowd who have grown tired the post-modern affairs that are all too common in the area. So for people whose idea of going to the pub is all about style over substance, the Princess of Wales won't suit them. However, for those who want a warm, genuine pub and are trapped in the wilds of NW1, it's thoroughly recommended.
