how to find it:
Rather sneakily, Highgate tube is a fair walk from Highgate Village. It should take about 15 mins to get from one to the other. Leave Highgate tube by the 'car park' exit so you're on the Archway Road. Cross the road and walk up Jacksons Lane till it meets Southwood Lane. Keep on Southwood Lane until you reach Highgate High Street. The pub should be on your left. Alternatively walk (or catch the bus) up Highgate Hill from Archway. At the top of the hill, its on the right

Recently refurbished and reopened the Rose and Crown is smart and trendy, but not offensively so. The selection of beers was reasonable for this kind of place - Abbot and Pride were on and well kept and there was a good selection of lagers and spirits. The main problem with the pub is that it seems to be undergoing a bit of an identity crisis: is it a gastropub or a simply pub that serves food ? It's clearly aiming for the former, but it hasn't quite got there yet. The first time we went there, some of us paid for our food upfront, whereas others were given a bill afterwards. A tad confusing for those of us who (after consuming a couple of pints of Abbot) almost clean forgot that we had to pay our bill before leaving (we hasten to add no misdemeanours were committed). The food was very good indeed, and the staff very accommodating - if it's not on the menu they'll do their best to prepare something else for you. Overall - not a bad bet for some good food and a decent pint.
