Recently refurbished, the White Hart is now part of the faceless pub family, with magnolia walls and the sort of cheery curtains my mother adores. However, our visit was tainted by the fact that a boisterous young drunkard was verbally abusing the poor barmaid. Ah, the perils of all-day drinking. Luckily he saw sense and behaved himself. And there was a big Pub Dog sunning itself in the outdoor garden just in case he didn't. Once he calmed down, you could make eye contact with the other customers, a reassuring mix on our visit of well-mannered folk, including a group of chatty locals who looked askance when the jukebox began to belt out The Teardrop Explodes (could have been worse, 'The Best of Chas and Dave' was on there too). One sly look in the direction of the bar and the volume was reduced to allow the conversations to continue. Behind the bar are the usual array of bottled and tap beers, with a fine selection of pink-type drink for the missus. Aimed at the younger demographic, it offers big screen TV for the barstool sports fan, a pool table and a dartboard for the more energetic patron. OK on our visit, though we hear it can get a bit lairy when the football's on.
