picture of CrownThe Crown's a handsome pub in a handy location that, despite being much improved in recent years still somehow manages to not quite make the mark. There's varied and interesting range of beer, the food is decent, unpretentious grub and the pub's handsome exterior and interior now have the sympathetic décor that it's always deserved. However, the food service lets it down - it might be friendly, but there's often a delay or an error that really ought not to have happened in the first place. As the pub is set in a prominent position in such a popular location as Clerkenwell Green (a euphemistic name nowadays, as there hasn't been in grass in these parts for a long, long time), it's inevitably popular with the workers (mostly designer types) from the surrounding offices. Lunchtime and early evenings during the week are especially popular. And it's often at these busy times that food can go astray or be so delayed that there's not enough time left to eat it. It's a real pity as the pub almost is so nearly there and it does all the other things right - including being one of the few pubs in the area that opens on Sundays. It will always be a popular pub, it's location practically guarantees that especially in summer - but with a bit more attention on the service front it could be an excellent pub.
