From Mansion House: when you leave the tube take the underground pedestrian route to Bow Lane (it's signposted). When you emerge in Bow Lane, turn left and you'll see the pub in front of you on your right. From Bank: take the Cheapside exit and walk along Poultry, then Cheapside (keeping No 1 Poultry on your left). Carry on over the junction with Queen Street, turn left into Bow Lane (just before Bow Church), walk down Bow Lane and you'll see the pub at the next junction on the corner on the left. From St. Paul's: walk down Cheapside and turn right into Bow Lane, just after Bow Church.

picture of Ye Olde WatlingThis place is always stuffed to the gunnells immediately after working hours. Occupying a corner plot at the junction of ancient Watling Street and Bow Lane the place was rebuilt after the blitz. The greying wood floor and very decent pint of Guinness make it reminiscent of one of those fake Irish pubs, but it's a rung above that. Very friendly, rowdy mixed crowd of tourists, office workers and tradesmen, it's always a lively one. The stairs to the loos are perilously steep - be extra careful. Not everyone's cup of tea then (you'll never get a seat for a start - well at least not until it's pretty late - let alone eat or drink without spillage) but if you do go, go prepared to sing and make merry. Now rebranded as a Nicholson's, but still a busy one.
