Thames Barrier (710m)
The Anchor and Hope has a slightly odd location in Charlton, just off Anchor and Hope Lane, home to Tavern Snacks, near a host of aggregate factories and on the Thames Path. The location is industrial yet at the same time quiet and pleasant. The pub itself is attractive, welcoming and has an atmosphere lacking in some of the other Charlton pubs. Drinking on tables overlooking the river, it's easy to imagine you're actually slightly further west in trendier Greenwich. The pub boasts three floors, the first the general bar, the second a restaurant and the third a "traditional English pub with baked potato menu". The signage explaining this was in German, French and Japanese as well as English which gives the pub an international feel. Not an amazing range of beers, but then its location and atmosphere make this one definitely worth a visit if you're local, particularly on warm summer evenings.
