picture of The CastleWith the continuing encroachment of the City into Aldgate, it's a welcome surprise to come across a pub that feels like it hasn't changed in years. That's not always a good thing, but when you have friendly staff and an interesting mix of punters cheap booze (wine £6 a bottle) and a pleasing environment to drink in, you won't hear us arguing. The newly added squashy furniture -perhaps a nod to the approaching City bardom- has changed the overall atmosphere of the place very little. There's a colourful history to this pub - we used to know it as "the Boxer" a good few years ago. Commercial Road is home to a few very rough and ready boozers - this isn't one of them. If you like your pubs with a bit of character, give it a try. It deserves a look before developers get their hands on it.
