Hey you - I wanna take you to a gay bar... But not just any old gay bar - oh no. Rather, the Moroccan-styled Charlie's Bar, plonked in the middle of a glut of East End council estates, just a stone's throw from where Marine McCutcheon grew up (true story). It doesn't look like much from the outside, and given its location, you'd be forgiven for thinking the worst - but don't condemn this place too quickly. Step inside and you'll be dazzled by lanterns, terracotta colourings, embroidered cushions and a ceiling canopy. We stopped by on a rainy Sunday night, and it was pretty busy. The vibe is warm and the staff willing, although we'd say it still rocks more on weekends, when it has been known to open late, with DJs and karaoke both making an appearance. It's also rumoured to do a killer cocktail. Charlie's Bar isn't a place you'd go out of your way to go to, but if you're in the area, it's a worth a look, if only for the surprise of being able to sip a pint of lager, shoeless and cross-legged on a raised platform with a plethora of cushions for company.
