Sadly, one of London's quaintest, cosiest, and indeed, most unique, pubs was "redone" a few years ago. And the result? The Smugglers is quite literally a shell of its former self. The charm, and indeed the heart, has been ripped out of the place. What we're now left with looks like any other cheap chain pub, with magnolia walls, too many spotlights and the sort of fake mahogany fittings so beloved of the multi-sites. The furniture is now a moveable feast, allowing them to cram more punters in to watch the screens (which have remained in place but now seem to be a focal point in the place following the relocation of the bar). It still does decent beer - Rebellion Smuggler (don't snigger) a lovely tup. They also server Thai food now, along with a large number of other pubs in the UK. Fortunately, the landlord remains in place, and that's the best thing about the Smugglers. What remains is a pub that is probably quite a useful place to keep in mind for the football, and not much else. It's no longer one you could dream about spending a rainy afternoon in, with a great pint, good food and unobtrusive music in the background.
