picture of The Eel PieThis place is best visited during a walk along one of the most beautiful stretches of the Thames. And it's probably best avoided when there's a big rugby union match on - the caricatures of rugby legends on the walls provide a reminder of the area's modern claim to fame. From the outside it looks like a fairly unprepossessing place on a quiet pedestrian thoroughfare, but inside it has the countrified air - and the whiff of tweeness - which characterises the area. Its trump card is the great selection of beers from the Hall & Woodhouse stable. This pub should be best enjoyed on a summer afternoon where you can smell the greenery and the river and imagine the shade of Alexander Pope (who lived just up the road) as the ideal drinking companion. Just don't confuse it with the notorious hotel (now shut) on the nearby island.
