picture of Jack Stamps Beer HouseWith some pubs you can see why they have not been reviewed for a while. Without the call of duty we would have walked straight past the run-down, peeling facade and, even then, backed out as we walked through God's waiting room to the bar. Some facts: it's average sized, nicotine coloured, wallpaper peeling from the ceiling, filthy and miserable. Imagine the worst station bar you've ever been to - and then make it worse. The separate dining area - with plastic tablecloths - promises Thai food and roast turkey. On this visit the 'specials' were sausage and beans (at two quid) or a 1.40 cheeseburger. Yes, it's cheap. Double spirits at 2, a bottle of wine 7, rubbish beer at sub 2 a pint - and lots of two-for-one offers. Big screens show racing during the day. Perhaps at night it transforms to a place of delight. But as this reviewer wiped the dangling cobweb from his hair in the scruffy Gents' he thought someone else could check that out. Our recommendation: visit if you are planning suicide and don't want your mind changed.
