Famous old pub this and its handsome Victorian structure reflects the locale perfectly. It's all very clean and well-mannered, possibly a little too much so. There's plenty of room - enough for a conservatory, restaurant, function room and a spacious beer garden. Really there's not much to dislike. Only, it's a bit too pretty and well-mannered and somewhat lacking in atmosphere. On a summer weekend drinkers who don't particularly want children running around the tables may feel like a US cavalryman surrounded by whooping Apaches. You suspect many of the drinkers wouldn't appreciate the marvels of the nearby Picture Gallery and don't particularly like other types of pubs. Some might call it twee, I prefer to believe that somewhere in the landlord's attic there's a portrait of a degenerate, filthy boozer serving bad beer to a collection of old wrecks and losers.
