This handsome pub dating from the early 19th century sits on the backstreets of Victoria and is one of only ten pubs to have appeared in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide since it's first publication. This wasn't enough, however, to exclude it from the relentless rota of owner Wells & Young's refurbishments. Having seen many other Young's refits which have erred significantly on the trendier 'wine and food' side of the pub trade, we had a certain amount of trepidation for the Buckingham. Thankfully, it is still a pub - after all, local civil servants still like a good pint - and the original features are still more or less in tact, with many now gleaming after a good polish. The blue velvet bench seating is absent however, replaced by additional chairs and tables, while the revamped menu still offers reasonable prices; £5.50 in change will give you a sandwich (sans the chips), while main courses float around the £8 mark. We liked the old Buckingham, but the new one is perfectly acceptable too, so the old three pint rating remains.
