Considering the history, character and heritage of Hampstead, its surprising that there aren't more classic pubs in the area. Of course, many have now smartened themselves up and moved into gastropub status, or simply closed down. Nevertheless, Ye Olde White Bear certainly has a good claim on being the best pub in Hampstead. It's comfortable and friendly, has board games and an impressive selection of six real ales which on our last visit included no less than four guest beers. There's also decent food that, although not particularly cheap, is certainly neither the most expensive nor the most pretentious in the neighbourhood. A splendid establishment.
