If you are not dying for a pint when you embark for the Holly Bush, you will be after you climb the nearly vertical hill which leads to its door. But it is well worth the effort. In Hampstead, the homes at the top of the hill are also at the top of the economic food chain, and therefore you won't find loud music or rowdy football fans here - and you won't miss them. We love authentically old pubs, but the Holly Bush is positively antediluvian. You feel as if Falstaff will stagger out of the toilet fastening his britches any moment, or you're in a period film. The little private nooks have high backs like choir stalls where you can say a prayer of thanks for the dozen excellent brews on tap. It is a favourite of the Hampstead gentry who crowd in at weekends, so you're more likely to enjoy a quiet pint next to the fireplace during the week.
