We've known this one since its days as the Jolly Gardeners, and whilst the pub has improved in its Bree Louise incarnation, it's still stymied by one or two factors. Let's start with the positives: the regularly changing ales are top notch and CAMRA approved, the much vaunted pies are wholesome enough and certainly attract decent numbers of local office staff at lunchtime. The pub is also more pleasant to visit since the smoking ban: its small size and box shape often gave the impression you were trapped inside an ash tray. However, it's these structural problems which still let this one down: whereas some small pubs have a natural cosiness to them, this one just feels cramped. So, whilst acknowledging that the owners have done their best to turn this one round, we just feel that there's still something just a little awkward and uncomfortable about it. For us, it's got to be about more than just the beer, and taking this pub as a whole - and not just judging the quality of its fare - it's a 2 pinter.
