Half restaurant, half-pub, the Duke of York is exactly the kind of place you'd expect in salubrious St. John's Wood. Tastefully stripped-out, a smattering of the Eastern-style decorations from before a refurbishment are still present; we particularly liked the metal filigree panels over the windows. There's a discreet restaurant section, separated from by the main area by a curtained doorway and the back of the pub had tablecloths and cutlery, indicating some kind of unspoken eating area rule. The food looked good, but tagged at the not unexpected NW8 prices, we gave it a miss. Consequently we sat at the front - the only bona fide drinking area, watching a mix of locals go about their lives. It was if nothing else representative of the area to see two made-up young ladies flicking through the Sunday tabloids to see if they or their friends had featured in the gossip sections that week.
