These days, some pubs make you feel out of place if you forget your mobile phone. Thankfully, the Rose is not one of them - you may feel naked here if you haven't got a copy of the Racing Post. It's odd to find a place in central London so unashamedly devoted to the turf, but then it is opposite a bookies. Only a stone's throw from Guy's Hospital, the pub's striking wrought-iron bar is suitably decorated with the odd chamber pot. There is a decent back room for a game of pool, although it seems unlikely that the Rose's locals ever make it that far away from the racing coverage. Although it doesn't have a particularly broad appeal, anthropologists of the pub experience will find the Rose an intriguing place for a pint.
