Out of the way of the bustle of Crouch End's boutique life, the Princess Alexandra was one of the remaining 'traditional' local pubs in the area. But no more. After benefiting from a recent modest refurbishment, it's down to the nearby Railway Tavern to be the last stronghold for geezers and old men. Marks are given for the restraint shown - the wood panelling is still present, but miss-matched furniture gives the place understated modernity. The food is also very good, (notwithstanding scattered spelling mistakes) but prices are rather high for a new place trying to attract a new crowd. Still, it's encouraging to see an interesting regular programme of events - from live jazz on Fridays and comedy nights, to superb Motown rarities played on Sunday night and even a Monday film club. It's a deceptively big space and with four large rooms (plus a great garden) its able to do all of this easily, whilst still being a destination for a quiet drink. We certainly wish the friendly people behind the bar success and if we stop encountering so many small children here on the weekend (a bane of Crouch End generally) we'll put it back up to the four pint rating it so recently earned.
