Whereas most of the land immediately east of the Square Mile has been turned over and relaunched, Aldgate still has a few unaltered patches (if you look hard enough you'll even find some old warehouses that haven't become flats). In keeping with this, the Brown Bear is an unpretentious pub seemingly untouched by modern pub trends. Of note on our visit were a good range of real ales (nothing out of the ordinary, but decently kept), a dartboard and a very easy going atmosphere. It feels like it hasn't changed in years - an increasingly rare thing in a part of town where stasis is a rarity.
