Gloucester

RIP: Greenwich Park Bar and Grill

Our final review:
"A busy mixed/gay pub that draws tourists in from Greenwich Park, the Gloucester is a mediocre place with bog-standard drinks and décor. There are far better pubs nearby, so don’t bother with this one."

Our final review:
"This seems a fairly typical locals’ pub and as such didn’t stand out on our visit. It was pretty small, dark and quiet-ish but everyone seemed perfectly fine about having interlopers on the premises. Nothing memorable about the pub itself, but two details do stand out: a dog which was built on the proportions of a blue whale and produced enough drool to float an armada and a visit from an itinerant hawker of erotic DVDs (he seemed to do a good trade). Whether either constitutes a good reason to visit is something we really couldn’t say. "

O'Sullivan's Bar

RIP: OSullivans Bar

picture ofOSullivans Bar

Our final review:
"Not that its name would suggest otherwise, but as soon as you step through the door of this cosy little establishment, there is no doubt left in your mind that here is a pub with its roots firmly planted deep in the Emerald Isle. Its walls burgeon with photographs, pictures and other paraphernalia of a Celtic theme and whilst the patrons’ Irish lilt has been replaced by a South London brogue, the atmosphere is friendly and genial. Fortunately, this is not one of those plastic ‘Oirish’ pubs and, judging by the state of the furniture, has been around long before the marketing departments of the larger breweries realised that Irish themed pubs were the way forward. The disappointing lack of traditional music is made up for by a good pint of Guinness and the opportunity to wash it down with a drop of Powers whiskey."

The Market

RIP: Market

picture ofMarket

Our final review:
"One might be forgiven for thinking that upon entering an establishment with such a name, one would be greeted by the sort of hubbub, colour and character one normally associates with market pubs. This, sadly, is not the case. In spite of the fact that Greenwich market was in full swing outside, the inside does not seem attract much of the passing tourism nor indeed many of the traders working nearby, perhaps this may be partly attributed to the pub’s rather unappealing exterior. This (coupled with the curt, indifferent bar staff on the day of review) renders the atmosphere somewhat cold and hollow. On the plus side however, old church pews (remnants from the Firkin days), plenty of tables and the fact that the pub is split level, means there’s always a good seat to watch the sport on the large TV screen opposite the balcony. Just make sure you bring someone to watch it with. (ex Funnel & Firkin)"
