Crown & Two Chairmen is a pub we haven't visited for ages as our last experience left us a bit cold. That said, it now feels like there's new management in and they're doing a sterling job with an excellent selection of pump & keg ales and ciders from interesting places (Doom Bar was the only 'mainstream' one on sale)! The staff were friendly and attentive making sure we were looked after. There's an upstairs bar with a slightly bohemian air that's open at lunchtime (full table service 1-3pm) and in the evenings. Useful to know when the downstairs gets rammed as we suspect it does, particularly at the weekends. We didn't try the food on this occasion, but the beer-battered black pudding evoked memories of chippies from 'up north'. It's a pleasant retreat on an afternoon, but the threat of plastic glasses outside suggests it gets enough busy with media luvvies to spill out onto the pavement. Worth a look if you've had enough shopping for one day! We'll be keeping an eye on this one.

Perhaps it's because I can be a bit of a local media luvvie, but I don't mind the Crown. Lots of good lagers on tap (Peroni, Star, Amstel), usually nice service and the upstairs setting is very pleasing on the eye and a nice place to disappear to. One star's very harsh, in my humble opinion!
